Mesothelioma Joint Compound

Prior to the late 1970s, asbestos was incorporated into many materials used in residential and commercial building construction. Joint compound, also known as joint cement or mud, was a commonly used building material that contained asbestos. As a result, drywall tapers, drywall finishers, plasterers, contractors and other trades were exposed to high concentrations of airborne asbestos dust without warning or protection. Laborers who worked with asbestos materials are at risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer as a result of their exposure to asbestos-containing materials.

Joint compound that contained asbestos was manufactured as both a dry powder and as a pre-mixed ready (wet) version. Numerous joint compound manufacturers incorporated asbestos into joint compound products because it was a durable, heat-resistant and inexpensive material. Adding asbestos to joint compound also prevented the compound from cracking when it dried.  Drywall tapers and finishers were exposed to asbestos through the application and clean-up processes of joint compound. Even those who worked in an area where asbestos-containing joint compound was mixed, sanded or swept are at risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer.
