Informing Your Doctor

Diagnosing mesothelioma can often be difficult, as the symptoms are similar to those of several other conditions. If you suspect that you may have an asbestos-related disease, contact your primary physician immediately so that he or she can perform a routine physical and review your medical history. During your initial medical history review, it is very important to mention where you have been employed and your previous occupation(s). This will better assist your doctor with regard to necessary medical tests and procedures to determine your condition.

A chest x-ray, CT scan or MRI may be necessary to determine abnormalities such as pleural thickening or fluid build-up. If fluid is present in the lung, heart area or abdominal region, a fluid sample may be taken and sent to a lab for further testing. In addition, tissue samples or a biopsy of the affected area may be necessary in determining if mesothelioma cells are present.
