Carpenters are highly skilled tradesmen that are often involved in various types of construction work. Finishing carpenters build and create intricate artistic designs on wood products, such as furniture and cabinetry. Framers assist in building wood frames for residential and commercial buildings. Shipwrights are carpenters that build the rough structure for boats and sea vessels. Rough carpenters work at various industrial job sites installing rough wooden structures including, concrete forms, scaffolds, tunnels, bridges and temporary frame shelters. Carpenters also install and remove other building materials including, floor tile, ceiling tile, joint compound, thinset, mastic, roofing materials and transite siding. Prior to the late 1970s, these products contained asbestos.

Exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and other asbestos-related diseases. Among most trades, carpenters have one of the highest incidence rates for developing mesothelioma. Before warnings were placed on asbestos-containing products in the late 1970s, carpenters who worked in the construction or home remodeling industries were exposed to asbestos through the application and removal of hundreds of building products. When carpenters were not working directly with asbestos, they were quite often in the immediate vicinity of other tradesmen including, electricians, roofers, drywall finishers and plumbers, who also applied and removed asbestos-containing materials. Quite often, carpenters worked shoulder-to-shoulder with fire proofers who sprayed asbestos-containing fireproofing materials on steel decking during new building construction.

At Lipsitz, Ponterio & Comerford, LLC, our attorneys bring third party lawsuits for mesothelioma and lung cancer against the companies that wrongfully failed to warn workers against the hazards of asbestos exposure. Carpenters have one of the highest incidence rates for developing mesothelioma, because of asbestos exposure while working in the construction, home remodeling and shipbuilding industries. If you or a loved one were once employed as a carpenter, and have developed mesothelioma, please contact us for your free and confidential case evaluation.
