Asbestos and Carbide Graphite

Those who were once employed at Carbide Graphite’s Packard Road plant in Niagara Falls, New York were regularly exposed to asbestos. The Carbide Graphite Group, Inc., manufactured graphite electrode products, needle coke and calcium carbide.  Insulating cement, which contained asbestos lined the furnaces employed for the manufacture of the electrodes.  Workers mixed the asbestos containing cement with water and then applied it to the surface of the furnaces. The mixing process caused large clouds of asbestos containing dust to float through the buildings.

The asbestos cement used to insulate the furnaces did not last long and needed to be reapplied on a continual basis. Carbide Graphite’s plant on Packard Road contained approximately eighty-eight ring furnaces in the Bake Department, four car bottom furnaces, approximately twenty furnaces in the Longitudinal Department and approximately seventy furnaces in the Graphitizing Department.   Each department fired its furnaces at different intervals. When the furnaces were fired they produced extreme high heat temperatures capable of causing the insulating cement to crack and crumble. The furnaces used in the electrode manufacturing process were very large, and cranes were needed to get into such furnaces to remove electrodes. This action ultimately caused additional wear and tear on the insulating cement after each firing. Workers would not only mix and reapply asbestos containing insulating cement to the furnaces, but they would also sweep up asbestos containing dust and debris that crumbled off the furnaces.
In addition, those who worked with or around asbestos containing pipe-covering that insulated steam lines throughout the plant are also at risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer. Asbestos pipe-covering was disturbed, removed and scraped off on a continual basis causing asbestos fibers to fill the air. Inhaling these fibers put the employees of Carbide Graphite at great risk of developing mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.
